What is the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist?

While both orthodontists and dentists are focused on your oral health, an orthodontist is a specialist who has completed an additional two to three years of advanced training after dental school. At what age should my child first see an orthodontist?

How does a young patient like this 7 year old present with an open bite?

Open bites can be caused by many factors: thumb sucking, tongue tie, pacifier use in late years, skeletal imbalances of the jaws, finger sucking, airway issues. The best thing to do if you notice an open bite in a young patient is to have it evaluated by your local orthodontist. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends every child be evaluated by their orthodontist by no later than age 7. Most of these children do not need treatment at this time, but the children that do, you will prevent many major factors with early intervention.

At Kragor Orthodontics, our doctors provide a complementary consultation for all children that include an examination, radiographs, digital scan, and photos that allow the orthodontist to evaluate and determine the orthodontic corrective course of action. With this evaluation, a treatment plan will be given. Sometimes the treatment plan is no treatment in which case the orthodontist will continue to monitor your child for future growth.

Did you know the American Academy of Orthodontics (AAO) recommends children to be evaluated by an Orthodontist by the age of 7? Timing is everything.

Timing is everything – even when it comes to your child’s orthodontic treatment. “Early” treatment, also called “interceptive” treatment, is performed while some baby teeth are still present.

The AAO recommends that your child’s first check-up with an orthodontist is done when an orthodontic problem is first recognized. We want this exam performed no later than age 7. Why age 7? By then, your child has enough permanent teeth for an orthodontist to evaluate the developing teeth and the jaws. This provides a wealth of information. AAO orthodontists are trained to spot subtle problems even in young children. Again, timing is everything.

There are generally two outcomes of an initial check-up:

No treatment is necessary now. Or treatment may be needed in the future. The child can be followed periodically by the orthodontist. The orthodontist will monitors while the face and jaws continue to grow. This is approximately 90% of the patients evaluated in our office.
There is a problem that recommends early treatment. This is approximately 10% of the patients evaluated in our office.

While there are many orthodontic problems that orthodontists agree are best treated after all permanent teeth have come in, e arly treatment can be in a patient’s best interests if their problem is one that could become more serious over time if left untreated. The goals of early treatment are: intercept the developing problem, eliminate the cause, guide the growth of facial and jaw bones, and provide adequate space for incoming permanent teeth. A patient may require a second course of treatment after all permanent teeth have come in. This helps to move those teeth into their best positions. Timing is everything, but it is never too late.

The types of problems orthodontists may recommend treatment for while a child still has some baby teeth include:

Underbites – when the lower front teeth are ahead of the upper front teeth
Crossbites – when the jaw shifts to one side, or the top is too narrow for the bottom
Openbites – when the top jaws and bottom jaws are open in the front, making the tongue visible
Very crowded teeth
Excessively spaced teeth
Extra or missing teeth
Teeth that meet abnormally, or don’t meet at all
Thumb-, finger-, or pacifier- sucking that is affecting the teeth or jaw growth

Some of these orthodontic problems are inherited, while others may result from accidents, dental disease, habits, or abnormal swallowing.

Treatment forms for early orthodontic treatment:

Fixed or removable “appliance” – a device used to move teeth, change the position of the jaw, or hold teeth in place in order to bring about desirable changes. An example of this is an orthodontic expander.
Braces – to help with cosmetic alignment of the front teeth
Removal of baby teeth – may help the permanent teeth erupt better. The extractions will be timed to take best advantage of a patient’s growth and development.

Regardless of how treatment goals are reached, the bottom line is that some orthodontic problems may be easier to correct if they are found and treated early. Waiting until all the permanent teeth have come in, or until facial growth is nearly complete, may make correction of some problems more difficult. Timing is everything.

Dr. Ambre did a fantastic job making our readers laugh while still getting people excited about their braces or Invisalign. There is no better time to get braces than this summer when the kiddos are out of school and the sun is out of course!

As you know, our office opened in August of last year. We hadn’t really put ourselves out there, so it was somewhat of a slow start. Now we are open 2 days a week, and getting very busy on those days. We have so much fun, and enjoy not only informing our patients on their orthodontic needs, but also providing amazing care with new technologies and a very clean clinic! Our Kragor Orthodontics open house was a great success! We enjoyed all of the support from our local colleagues, patients, and members of our Woodstock community. It was so much fun and we gave away some awesome prizes too! We want to thank everyone who was in attendance for this wonderful event. And mostly want to thank Miss Natalie for her huge help with the open house as she planned it all herself!

The yummy food was catered by Taste of Italy, located in Woodstock. The food was fantastic–and there was hardly any left overs (a good problem to have). The cookies had our logos on them which were super cute thanks to Butter + Sugar. And tasty too! We really enjoyed having everyone there.

The night was filled with office tours, laughter, and fun. Dr. Kragor did his part and took lots of Polaroids of our patients. The selfie wall seemed to be a huge hit!
